Last Updated: June 2026

Quick Answer
If you're travelling abroad in 2026, you may need travel vaccinations, malaria prevention, or destination-specific health advice depending on where you're going, how long you'll stay, and what activities you'll be undertaking. Ideally, travel vaccinations should be arranged at least 6–8 weeks before departure, although last-minute travellers can often still benefit from vaccination and travel health advice. Our advice is any protection is alway better than no protection. Book here
Why Travel Vaccinations Matter
Every year, thousands of UK travellers visit destinations where infectious diseases such as Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Rabies, Yellow Fever, Japanese Encephalitis, and Meningitis remain a risk. These diseases can be mild in their pathology or may cause hospitalisation and even death in some cases.
Many of these diseases are uncommon in the UK but remain prevalent across parts of:
-
Asia
-
Africa
-
South America
-
The Middle East
Travel vaccinations help protect you from potentially serious illness and may be required for entry into certain countries. If you are unsure of what you need book here for a travel health consultation
When Should I Book My Travel Vaccinations?
We recommend booking a travel health consultation 6–8 weeks before departure.
This allows sufficient time for:
-
Multiple-dose vaccine courses
-
Development of immunity
-
Malaria prevention planning
-
Travel documentation requirements
However, if your trip is sooner, it is still worth arranging an appointment as many vaccines can still provide protection when given closer to departure. There are some rapid schedule doses which can still give you protection

We assess:

Your destination

Common Travel Vaccines
Hepatitis A
Recommended for many destinations across:
-
Asia
-
Africa
-
South America
-
Eastern Europe
Hepatitis A is usually spread through contaminated food and water. A single dose before travel gives you 3 years protection and a second after 6 months gives you 25 years protection. Book here
Typhoid
Common in countries where sanitation standards may be lower.
Typhoid vaccination is often recommended for travellers visiting:
-
India
-
Pakistan
-
Bangladesh
-
Nepal
-
Parts of Africa
-
South-East Asia
A single dose last for 3 years. Book here
Hepatitis B
May be recommended for:
-
Long-term travellers
-
Healthcare workers
-
Volunteers
-
Those requiring medical treatment abroad
Doses can last lifetime but a check on previous vaccinations would be required
Rabies
Considered for:
-
Backpackers
-
Cyclists
-
Adventure travellers
-
Long-stay visitors
-
Remote rural travel
Rabies risk exists across many parts of the world, especially Asia and Africa. Rabies is life threatening and once it reaches the spinal column it is always fatal. Pre-exposure (before travelling) prophylaxis is a great way to allow treatment to be managed if anything were to happen. We stock both the 3 dose (£75/dose) and 2 dose schedule (£105/dose).
Japanese Encephalitis
Japanese Encephalitis (JE) is a viral infection spread through mosquito bites and is found in many parts of Asia and the Western Pacific region.
The risk to most short-term tourists is low. However, vaccination may be recommended for travellers who:
-
Are spending extended periods in rural areas
-
Are visiting agricultural regions, particularly rice-growing areas
-
Are travelling during the rainy season
-
Are backpacking or undertaking outdoor activities
-
Are staying in endemic areas for one month or longer
Countries where Japanese Encephalitis may be present include:
-
Thailand
-
Vietnam
-
Cambodia
-
Laos
-
Indonesia
-
Philippines
-
India
-
Nepal
-
Sri Lanka
-
China
-
Japan
Symptoms can range from mild fever to severe neurological illness. Although rare, serious cases can result in permanent disability or death.
A travel health consultation can help determine whether Japanese Encephalitis vaccination is appropriate based on your destination, duration of travel, and planned activities.
Dengue Fever
Dengue Fever is one of the fastest-growing mosquito-borne illnesses worldwide and is commonly found throughout tropical and subtropical regions.
Dengue is present in many popular travel destinations including:
-
Thailand
-
Bali and Indonesia
-
Vietnam
-
Malaysia
-
Singapore
-
Philippines
-
India
-
Sri Lanka
-
Mexico
-
Brazil
-
Caribbean countries
Symptoms may include:
-
High fever
-
Severe headache
-
Muscle and joint pain
-
Rash
-
Extreme fatigue
In some cases, Dengue can develop into a severe and potentially life-threatening illness requiring hospital treatment.
As there is currently no routine travel vaccine suitable for most UK travellers, prevention focuses on avoiding mosquito bites through:
-
Insect repellent
-
Long-sleeved clothing
-
Mosquito nets where appropriate
-
Air-conditioned accommodation
Travellers should seek medical attention if they develop fever during or after travel to a Dengue-risk area.
Chikungunya
Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral infection found in parts of:
-
Asia
-
Africa
-
Central and South America
-
The Caribbean
Outbreaks can occur unexpectedly, and travellers visiting affected areas may be at risk.
Symptoms often include:
-
Sudden fever
-
Severe joint pain
-
Muscle aches
-
Fatigue
-
Rash
While most people recover fully, joint pain can occasionally persist for weeks or months.
A Chikungunya vaccine has recently become available for certain travellers and may be considered for individuals at increased risk depending on their destination, duration of stay, age, and underlying health conditions.
Your travel health consultation will assess whether Chikungunya vaccination is appropriate based on the latest travel health recommendations and your personal risk factors.
Mosquito-Borne Disease Prevention
Many travel-related illnesses are transmitted through mosquito bites, including:
-
Malaria
-
Dengue Fever
-
Chikungunya
-
Japanese Encephalitis
-
Zika Virus
-
Yellow Fever
Regardless of your destination, reducing mosquito exposure is one of the most effective ways to protect your health while travelling.
We recommend:
-
Using insect repellent containing DEET or other effective ingredients
-
Wearing long sleeves and trousers in the evenings
-
Sleeping in air-conditioned rooms where possible
-
Using mosquito nets in higher-risk areas
-
Avoiding stagnant water where mosquitoes breed
During your consultation, we will provide destination-specific advice to help minimise your risk of mosquito-borne diseases.
Yellow Fever
Yellow Fever vaccination is required for entry into certain countries in Africa and South America. It's transmitted via infected mosquito bites. We have been a registered Yellow Fever Vaccine Centre since 2009 and have experience in administration of this vaccine in complex cases. Yellow Fever is a live vaccine so is not ideal for everyone, so a risk assesment would be required before administration of the vaccine. We do offer a medical exemption certificate if you cannot have the vaccine or any reason. An official International Certificate of Vaccination (ICVP) may be required for border entry.
Meningitis ACWY
Required for many travellers undertaking:
-
Hajj
-
Umrah
Saudi Arabia requires proof of vaccination for pilgrimage visas.

-
Mosquito avoidance strategies
The need for malaria tablets depends on:
-
Exact destination
-
Time of year
-
