Yellow Fever Vaccine

Yellow fever (YF) is a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes causing a spectrum of disease from mild to severe symptoms.
Mosquito bite avoidance and yellow fever vaccination is recommended for travellers visiting countries where there is a risk of YF virus transmission.
Under the International Health Regulations (2005), an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis for YF may be an entry requirement for some travellers to YF risk countries.
YF certificate requirements are not necessarily connected to the risk of disease for a traveller.
The YF vaccine is only available at designated UK Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres (YFVCs).
There is no treatment for YF disease. Care of an infected person is based on managing the symptoms.

Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine

Japanese encephalitis is a viral infection that can cause encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and is transmitted through the bite of an infection mosquito.
The disease occurs in large parts of Asia and the Western Pacific, especially in rural areas where rice growing and pig farming are common.
Whilst most infections are mild, causing headache and blurred vision, however more severe symptoms require hospitalisation, death rates are high and neurological complications are common.
If you are staying mainly in city dwelings then the risk is low, however in exploration type of holidays where rural travel is present then the risk is particularly high!
There is a highly effective vaccine against Japanese Encephalitis - two doses can be administered within 7 days for effective immunisation.

Chikungunya Vaccine

Chikungunya is a viral infection spread through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. Recently, outbreaks are becoming more and more common, developing into a major global health issue.
Symptoms include fever, severe joint and muscle pains, headaches and skin rash which are self-limiting; however long-term joint pain may persist for several months after infection.
Check with our experts if Chikungunya is present in your travel destination
Two vaccines (IXCHIQ® and Vimkunya®) have been licensed in the UK. In February 2026, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced updated restrictions on the use of IXCHIQ® following a safety review.

Rabies Vaccine

Rabies is a disease transmitted by the saliva of an infected mammal. It's rare to get it, however when it enters our spinal column it is 100% fatal. There have been several cases of UK citizens bringing rabies back from their holidays and have caused death many months after the initial infection. The vaccine can stop the infection completely so long as you seek attention within the expected time limits.

Treatment is required within immediately in a non-vaccinated individual, whereas pre exposure gives you 48 hours to seek attention.
